Active sitting isn’t a posture. It’s a system. The Varier ergonomic kneeling chair opens the hip angle so the body keeps moving — micro-corrections all day. Designed by Peter Opsvik in 1979, made in Norway, the original active-sitting design. This page sits alongside the broader ergonomic kneeling chair hub.
What “active sitting” actually means
Active sitting is the design hypothesis Varier has been testing since 1979. It says: a static seated posture, no matter how supported, is the source of most desk-pain problems. The body wants to move; if the chair lets it, the spine settles in alignment, the hips stay free, and the workday does not compound into back strain. The Variable Balans was the first commercial chair built around this principle. The rest of the Balans family extended it.
The phrase is often used loosely — “any chair that lets you fidget” — but the Varier definition is specific: forward-tilted seat, open hip angle, weight shared between seat and shins or seat and floor, gravity-driven micro-movement.
The Varier active-sitting chairs
- Variable Balans — kneeling format, the 1979 original.
- Thatsit Balans — adjustable kneeling, taller frame.
- Wing — wider kneeling seat.
- Move stool — sit-stand stool format.
- Multi Balans — multi-position kneeler.
The Variable Balans is the canonical active-sitting chair.
Heritage and origin
Norwegian, since 1979. Designed by Peter Opsvik. Continuous production through Varier. Active sitting is the design philosophy; the Variable Balans is the chair that made the case for it. Forty-seven years of practice.
Frequently asked questions
Is active sitting the same as fidgeting?
No. Active sitting is a chair-driven system — the geometry holds the open hip angle and encourages micro-correction. Fidgeting is a personal behaviour; active sitting happens whether you fidget or not.
Are all kneeling chairs active-sitting chairs?
Most are, in principle. The Variable’s geometry is tuned to the active-sitting hypothesis specifically; mass-market kneelers vary in how closely they implement it.
Can I do active sitting on a regular chair?
Limited. The conventional posture works against the principle; active sitting works best on chairs designed for it.
What is the difference from a balance ball?
Balance ball requires constant active engagement; the Variable’s geometry does the alignment work for you. See the kneeling chair vs balance ball comparison.
