The Highest Value of an Innovative Product is the Idea.
At Varier, we’re proud of the history of every single one of our chairs, from the first drawing to the final product. To honor our designs, we ensure our chairs are produced with the highest quality materials. When you buy a Varier, you can be sure to enjoy your chair for many years to come.
The Idea Behind the Variable balans
The original kneeling chair was invented in Norway, a country where furniture design ranks number one in the design industry. In the 70s, industrial designer, Peter Opsvik, known for his unconventional sitting designs, believed it was a mistake to only give the body one static sitting position. Peter’s focus on incorporating movement led to the design of the original kneeling chair, Variable. This never seen before concept challenged the status quo. The unique combination of tilted runners and kneeling pads gave you upright support and fluid movement to transition between countless positions. The first Variable balans was successfully launched in 1979 and has since become a Scandinavian icon with countless fans worldwide. Movement and active sitting have helped many generations to live healthier, more balanced lives.
Upholstery
The high-quality upholstery artfully contrasts the chair’s strong structure. Varier chairs are available in a variety of different fabrics and colors. You can choose from natural leather, wool, cotton, or fully recycled polyester. One of our longstanding suppliers, Kvadrat, a textile company established in Denmark in 1968 with deep roots in Scandinavia’s design tradition, is dedicated to the sustainable use of raw materials and the minimization of environmental impact. Our standard fabric, Revive, is made from 100% post-consumer recycled polyester. This production process is much more efficient than virgin polyester. Less energy and chemicals are used, while CO2 emissions are minimized. Another of our trusted fabric suppliers, Gabriel, founded in Denmark in 1851, commits to sustainable initiatives and has been recognized by numerous certifications – many of them first within the industry. Fame, a fabric made from 95% New Zealand wool, has the EU Oeko-Tex Ecolabel and is 100% free of heavy metals, such as toxic chemicals. Wool has a long lifespan and can be used longer than other textile products. Both Kvadrat and Gabriel hold the leading position in Europe’s high-quality textile market and supply architects, designers, and private consumers worldwide with high-quality, long-lasting, and innovatively produced fabric.
Quality and Resilience
A chair that allows for continuous movement has a different standard than a conventional chair. To produce chairs that endure various pressures, impeccable quality is our priority. All wooden components on our chairs are made from top-quality beech plywood from European forests. Rather than using solid wood, plywood enables you to mold the wood together, eliminating waste and increasing durability rather than using solid wood. The wood is not only a sustainable choice; its structure is light and stable. The consistency reduces the tendency of wood to split and prevents expansion and shrinkage. Our plywood is covered with Ash top veneer, manually sanded, and coated with water-based, non-toxic lacquers for a beautiful finish. This means that Varier can easily recycle it in an ecologically responsible manner.
Quality Tests
European Standards set strict requirements for the strength, durability, and safety of the office and home furniture. Varier chairs are regularly tested with static and dynamic loads and impacts on all individual parts, ensuring they can tolerate everyday use for many years. This is especially important, as our chairs are made for movement and activity.
We manufacture products with uncompromising quality designed to incorporate both function and design. We work with hand-picked, certified suppliers that ensure our stringent standards are met. All materials used in production, for example, the aluminum parts made from recycled material, are carried out with the highest efficiency and lowest energy consumption possible. When you buy a Varier chair, you take on a journey towards a sustainable future.
Top Quality, Top Design
A Varier chair is so much more than a sitting device. It’s the story of an innovative pioneer who dared to create a chair with no legs or backrest. It’s proof that an unconventional design can become an icon, despite the constant changes in furniture trends. And it’s the testimony of carefully selected materials, crafted into chairs that will last for decades. Just try it. You will know it’s an original when you see it.
