We design and produce high-quality, ergonomic chairs that invite people to move while they sit.
Since 1979, Varier products have led the way in innovation within our field and inspired creativity in workspaces and homes worldwide. We believe that we can live healthier and more sustainable lives by being in balance. To us, being in balance means a mixture of stability and movement. Our versatile collection of chairs reflects our commitment to human-centered design, focusing on people’s needs as a starting point. Simply put, we bring color, play, and function to ergonomics.
Our chairs have been meticulously designed in close collaboration with some of the most tradition-breaking and unafraid Scandinavian designers, including Opsvik, Øie, Ekstrøm, Salto, and Sigsgaard, who has been widely recognized for their positive effects on health. Peter Opsvik took furniture design and turned it upside down in the 1970s. He was an ambassador of the revolutionary.
Olav Eldøy is a Norwegian interior architect and designer. He has his education from the Bergen National Academy of Art and Design. After starting his own practice in 1977, Eldøy received several awards and recognitions for his work within furniture design.
Norwegian designer, Per Øie, graduated from Bergen Academy of Art and Design in 1958. His designs have been showcased around the world, including exhibitions in Tokyo, Paris, London and Copenhagen. Øie gained national recognition for his Move chair and was awarded the highly sought-after DOGA Honorary Award in 2002.
Peter Opsvik is a Norwegian industrial designer born in 1939, trained at the Bergen College of Applied Art and the Norwegian State College of Applied Art in Oslo. Opsvik has worked as a freelance industrial designer since 1970, and currently has his own design studio in Oslo, where he works with seven colleagues focusing on product design as a mean for solving real-life problems. Throughout his career, Opsvik has attempted to overcome our stereotypical sitting habits with his unconventional seating solutions. With a playful and human starting point, his work is a display of how norms of sitting nicely and sitting still can be broken.
Like many talented industrial designers of his generation, Terje Ekstrøm had one foot in crafts and the other in industry. He trained as a cabinet maker and upholsterer before studying interior and furniture design at the National College of Art and Design in Oslo, Norway. Ekstrøm’s work contributed to a new vitality and independence to the Norwegian design scene of the 70s and 80s, at a time of significant cultural and social change. Ekstrøm represented a new generation of designers who challenged the ideas of Scandinavian design. Although he is today seen as one of Norway’s first postmodern designers, Ekstrøm’s original output and its mediation is also connected to the ideals of the modern movement and later pop culture.
Danish designer Thomas Pedersen works from his studio in Aarhus where he collaborates with leading furniture brands. He has incorporated form and function in all of his products.
